'97 born OHL 1st and 2nd team all stars

1st Team

G Michael McNiven Owen Sound Attack

McNiven is the run away favourite for OHL goalie of the year. He led the OHL in GAA, Wins, tied for the lead in shutouts and was within stricking distance of the league lead in save percentage. There is no denying his elite talent and gives the Attack a chance to win every night even if for some odd reason their offence isn't clicking. His 3184 minutes placed him 3rd in the OHL so there were few nights off and he was constently put up against the OHLs best teams and was a leading reason as to why Owen Sound was 12-5-1 vs Erie, SSM, LDN and WSR.

D Filip Hronek Saginaw Spirit

With 61 points in 59 games this season the Saginaw import pick was one of only 3 defencemen in the OHL to finish with more than a point per game. What is equally impressive is that Hronek finished the year as a +15 while playing high leveraged mintues on a team that missed the playoffs. The late birthday Hronek was a 2016 draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings and will jump to the AHL next season. Those who were lucky enough to catch him this year were happy as he made Saginaw a decent team to watch even if their record was unsatisfactory.

D Mitchell Vande Sompel London Knights

Picked up from Oshawa at the trade deadline Vande Sompel finished the year with among the offensive leaders on the blueline once again. Over his career he has picked up 174 points in 218 games. His offensive numbers dipped a bit once he was acquired by London but his versatility and leadership was evident once Victor Mete went down with an injury. One interesting note is that in his 30 games with London Vande Sompel did not pick up a single penalty.

F Alex DeBrincat Erie Otters

The run away favourite to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award. Became the first player since the 1970s to finish with 3 straight 60 goal seasons. Became the highest Scoring US born and trained player in OHL history. Helped the Otters Jump out in the standings early while Dylan Strome was still in the NHL. An all around dangerous player and elite offensive talent. Will go down as one of the best to ever suit up in the league.

F Jeremy Bracco Windsor Spitfires

Bracco finsihed 7th in the OHL in points per game this season. Started the year on a 25 game point streak while with the Kitchener Rangers. Finished the season with Windsor and picked up 32 points in his final 30 games. Won a gold medal with the USA at the world junior hockey championships over the holidays

F Petrus Palmu

The diminutive Finnish forward had a career year finishing 9th in the league in points per game and 4th overall as he fell just shy of the century mark. It was a career year as he smashed his career highs across the board. He was particularly dynamite on the power play where his 43 points placed him 2nd in the league

2nd Team

G Jeremy Helvig Kingston Frontnacs

Helvig was an absolute star this year for the offensivly starved Frontenacs. He played more than any other goalie in the league logging an incredible 3446 minutes this season. Inspite of his heavy work load Helvig thrived with the pressure of carrying his team as he posted strong numbers in his first full season as a starter and allowed the Fronts to pick up home ice in the first round despite scoring only 179 goals in 68 games this year.

D Villi Sarijarvi  Mississauga Steelheads

Finished with 31 points in 34 games as he missed half the season recovering from surgury and playing in the world junior championships. The Steelheads record was vastly different with him in the lineup as he is a driver of the possesion game. An elite puck moving defenceman who can spear head the offensive attack from his own zone. finsished 6th among OHL Dmen in points per game and he averaged an incredible 4.4 shots per game

D Jalen Smereck  Flint Firebirds

Picked up in a n offseason trade with Oshawa Smereck teamed with Henderson and Peters to form the backbone of the Flint blueline. Leaned on to play heavy high leveraged minutes Smereck thrived and earned himself a contract with the Pheonix Coyotes out of training camp. His offensive numbers took a significant jump this year and he continued to play with an edge that makes him very affective in his own zone.

F Ryan Moore Flint Firebirds

The Flint Firebirds leading scorer finally put it all together and showed the promise that made him a 2nd round draft pick of the Windsor Spitfires in 2013. He set career highs across the board and was particularly dangerous for Flint at even strength. Flints offensive production was somewhat top heavy this season but Moore seemed to thrive being in a position where he had to carry a team at times.

F Artur Tyanulin  Ottawa 67's

The Russian import was the 67's leading scorer this season by a whopping 22 points. His elite playmaking and vision made him a threat both on the power play and 5on5. Tyanulin is an individual who made those around him better with his passing and will be a hard piece to replaces when he moves on after this season.

F Zach Senyshyn  Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

The Greyhounds leading goal scorer had another great season after a trying offseason that saw him miss the Bruins development camp due to Mono and their main camp due to appendicitis. These road bumps slowed Zach down early in the year but as he got back into his routine he just kept putting the puck in the net. He finished with 42 goals in 59 games with 36 of them coming at even strength. His 10 game winning goals were 2nd in the league and his 10 1st goals had him tied for 3rd in the league.
