October OHL Recap

Trades for the month
15 trades made their way through the league offices in October. Only 2 of the 15 trades saw players switching both sides. Almost a 100% increase in the action we saw in September. I imagine November will be slower than October as teams will use the next 4 weeks to see what they need ahead of the trade deadline and world junior camps. We are starting to get a good idea of who the contenders are as well as those who may sell at the deadline.
Trade Breakdown by Birth Year
'97 5
'98 5

Breakdown by Draft Picks
2nd - 5
3rd - 1
4th - 7
5th - 2
6th - 1
7th - 2
8th - 1
9-15th - 5

As always you can find an updated inventory list of teams draft pick assets courtisy of @writemattwilson who did a much better job than I did at organizing it here

Oct 4th

Peterborough
Tyler Rollo

to

London
Conditonal OS 4th 2018

Breakdown
The Knights in the midst of their struggles brought in Tyler Rollo from Peterborough As Miletic (since returned) and Crawley were still playing in the AHL. The conditional 4th becomes a 3rd if Rollo averages a point per game with the Knights. Rollo has 2 assists in 8 games with the Knights so I think it is safe to say those conditions wont be matched. From the Pete's point of view Rollo became expendable when Korostelev was returned to the AHL. It is a fair return for the OA and could turn into a usefull asset down the road

Oct 8th

Mississauga
Austin Osmanski

to

Peterborough
4th round 2018
4th round 2020

Breakdown
The Petes made a much needed addition to their blueline by picking up the Buffalo native from the Steelheads. Osmanski didnt have hte greatest season for the East Champion Steelheads last season but his playoff experience will be a boost to the young Pete's blueline. The '98 born defender has 7 points in 11 games for the Pete's. His career high entering the season was 10 in 65 games as a 17 year old.

Oct 10

Sudbury
Conor Ali

to

Kingston

4th 2020

Breakdown
A potential buy low move by the Kingston Frontenacs. The '99 born defender was a 3rd round pick of the Wolves who hasnt progressed as expected. The change of scenery could help and it gives the Fronts 2 years of service and hopefully fits nicely into their young core. In Sudbury it is the new regime moving out players that dont fit into their vision and recouping some assets that will allow them to implement theirs.

Oct 12
Barrie
Shane Collins

to

London
14th 2018

Breakdown
A veteran blueliner with 186 games of WHL experience. This is the 3rd time this year the Colts have used their waiver position to pluck a player from another league in the CHL with the plan to trade him.

Oct 13
Niagara
Andrew Somerville

to

Guelph
NB 14th 2018

Breakdown
For a late round pick the Storm take a flyer on a depth piece that got lost in the numbers game in Niagara. The '99 born skater played 11 games with Niagara last year while spending most of his time in the GOJHL. This season he is averaging 2 points per game for Fort Erie and has suited up 3 times for the Storm.

Oct 16
North Bay
Daniil Vertiy

to

Saginaw
Con 15th 2018

Breakdown
This will be the 3rd team for the former 2nd round pick. The russian born '98 had a career high 29 points last season but his points per game this year with both teams are lagging. If he can pick up the offensive pace a little and it will be an decent pick up by the Spirit given their lack of offence.

Oct 17
Sault Ste. Marie
Joseph Raaymakers

to

London Knights
Tyler Johnson
Flint 2nd 2019
Ldn 2nd 2023
con. Ldn 4 2020

Breakdown
Raaymakers chose not to report to the Greyhounds and awaited a trade after losing the #1 job last year before regaining it with a fantastic playoffs. The Greyhounds held on to Raaymakers as long as possible waiting to get their desired return and it seems to have paid off as it has been a while since a goalie has garnered such a return. The Knights get some stability in net and it has quickly paid dividends as they have won 4 of 5 since picking up Raaymakers and he is sporting a .926 save percentage.

Flint
Kole Sherwood

to

Kitchener
Kit 2nd 2019
SSM 2nd 2020
Kit 3 2021
Kit 5 2020

Breakdown
A big return for the Firebirds for the OA forward who was surprisingly returned. With a younger roster and 3 capable OAs already on the roster Flint was dealing from a position of strength and was able to pickup some valuable future picks that can be used to augment this young core with trades in the future. The Firebirds however have struggled greatly since making this trade. The Rangers have yet to get the offensive boost they expected when acquiring Sherwood but he did break out in the last game last weekend picking up 1st star honours picking up 2 goals and 2 assists.

Kitchener
Doug Blaisdell

to

Sudbury
Con Kgn 4th 2020

Breakdown
This trade actually went down before the Sherwood trade. The Rangers needed to move an OA and the Wolves had an opening and a need for an OA Dman to soak up some high leveraged minutes and help insulate some of their younger and developing Dmen. Blaisdell has fit in rather nicely with the Wolves and has added some much needed leadership on their blueline.

Windsor Spitfires
Hayden McCool

to

Oshawa Generals
OSH 4 2020

Breakdown
A depth move that for a local kid who has underachieved in his 4 years in the OHL. This move would facilitate the need for the future trade of Mason Kohn which also needed a 4th in 2020. So if the Gens finish ahead of the Spirit in 3 years this would be a nice gain. Windsor continues to slowly add to their draft cupboard by moving a surplus piece.

Oct 22nd
Barrie Colts
Christian Propp

to

Owen Sound Attack
2nd Erie 2019
OS 5th 2019
OS 7th 2020

Breakdown
The Attack finally found the answer to their goalie issues... just kidding. The Colts sell high on Propp who had a strong couple of games as Leo Lazarev's back up and get some much needed assets likely to be used to give this team some much needed depth.

Owen Sound Attack
Christian Propp
OS 10th 2020

to

North Bay Battalion
Brady Lyle
NB 7th 2020

Breakdown
Propp is moved to North Bay just as quickly as he is brought in as the Attack pick up disgruntled former 1st round pick Brady Lyle. Lyle really cements this defence for the next 2 years. If the Attack do go out and spend big on a goalie like Dipietro what is to stop them from competing for the next 2 seasons? North Bay gets what they hope will be the answer to their goalie questions except for the fact that Propp went down with an injury minutes into his first game with the Battalion.

Guelph Storm
Cole Ceci

to

Oshawa Generals
Osh 8th 2020

Breakdown
Ceci lasted 25 days in Guelph and gets moved for an 8th in 2020 after being picked up for a 9th in 2018. While the round is increased the fact that it comes 2 years later probably has the Storm coming out behind on this experiment. For the Generals this does nothing to alleviate their questions marks behind Keyser. That said never doubt Hunt when picking up discarded pieces.

Oct 23rd

Owen Sound
Nick King

to

North Bay
Con NB 15th 2018

Breakdown
The Attack move a '99 born defender who became expendable due to the Lyle trade to North Bay who have an opening because of the Lyle trade. This was likely part of the Lyle trade but the Attack needed King to play on the 22nd so they could ice a full lineup.

Oct 30
Saginaw
Brendan Bonello

to

Kingston

Kgn 6th 2019

Breakdown
The Frontenacs add a 3rd goalie to their roster, a former highly regaurded prospect who was never able to get it going in Saginaw. This gives the Fronts an option if they decide to move from Helvig. As for the Spirit this clears a bit of a back log in net for them but will leave them in need of another goalie if they decide to move Cormier to a contender at the deadline.

Important Links for the month

From Brock Otten over at OHL Prospects Guide his first top 50 list for the upcoming NHL draft. Always a must read.

The one and only Dominic Tiano (@dominictiano) has your NHL draft eligible Statistical leaders posted here as well as his Draft Eligibile player of the month Brady Hinz both must reads for OHL/NHL fans

I feel I am calling everything a must read but this piece on Akil Thomas on Icedogs this week is fantastic. A first person account from Akil on what it is like playing in his draft year.

@GeneralsUpdates released some interesting stats based posts. First he looked at team face/off statistics and you can find that here. Also he looked at the amount of production that teams are getting from their '00 and '01 birth years here.

Matt Wilson does more than just keep track of draft picks. He put up a good post of online resources for OHL here.

The guys at the Hockey Writers also do a Power Rankings. Here is their most recent. Be sure to check it out but only after you check mine out first ;-)

As for Power Rankings dont forget to check out the ones I post. They will either come out Monday or Tuesday depending on my work schedule and how many OHL games are on Sundays. Here are my rankings from Week 6, Week 5, Week 4 and Week 3 from October.

Last but certainly not least Kitchener Rangers scribe Josh Brown the best new Edition this season for OHL fans which is his weekly 21. Here is his last post for October going over his favourite thing from each OHL rink

Major penalty tracker

5 of 7 head checks have resulted in suspensions
All slashing and slewfooting majors have resulted in suspensions
1 of 3 Knee's and Checks from Behind have resulted in suspensions
You can follow my suspension Tracker Here

A couple of other notes... Alex Turco is the only player with 2 majors this year. First a checking from behind major that did not result in a suspension before a 10 game ban for his headcheck on Trent Fox.... Only 2 head checks have not resulted in suspensions and both of those were against the Peterborough Petes.... Of the 21 major penalties up till November 1st only 3 have come in the opening period and 2 of those were in the same game....No team has drawn more Majors than the Petes with 5 only Oshawa and Sudbury have drawn 3..... The Icedogs lead the way with 3 majors themselves but none have been headchecks....
