OHL Transaction Review

Trade Freeze comes into affect tomorrow. For those who have been waiting patiently I will have my draft pick database updated either tomorrow afternoon or Sunday Morning depending on what time my flight gets into Sault Ste Marie. Till then enjoy this weeks recap on all the transactions in the OHL.

Suspensions

Jack Hidi, Brendan Burke, Brandon Crawley London Knights - 2 Games - 2nd fight in same stoppage (leaving crease for burke)

A line brawl that started when Mike Baird crashed into the crease Brendan Burkes Crease and wouldnt leave. Mildly surprised with Burkes suspension as Zach Bowman didn't seem to receive one last week although it may just not have been posted on the league site.

Brett McKenzie, Zach Shankar North Bay Battalion- 2 Games - 2nd fight in same stoppage

More fallout from the line brawl with London

Mike Baird, Aiden Jamieson; North Bay and London - 3 games - 2nd fight in same stoppage + helmet violation.

Personally I was surprised Baird only got 3 games due to the violent nature in which he ripped off Brendan Burkes mask and was the aggressor in that fight.

Head Scratchers

Mason Marchment Hamilton Bulldogs - Checking from Behind

Played Saturday after the hit so you have to think he avoided suspension but he absolutly lambasted McGuire from Peterborough from behind into the dasherboard at  the bench. McGuire was down and needed to be attended to for 10 minutes. If Marchment who is a repeat offender gets off with nothing while guys like Mangiapane and Goetz get 8 and 12 for what they did this year then it is a total outrage. I thought the league was soft on Sean Day and this hit was 10x worse!

Matt Schmalz Sudbury Wolves - Head Check

Has already come out that this has been reviewed and Schmalz will not receive supplemental discipline. I didnt see any video on the hit so I cant say much but It doesnt happen very often where you get a 5 minute head checking penalty and no suspension.

Trades

Owen Sound

Jarret Meyet
Con 5th '18

to

Sudbury

Trenton Bourque

Breakdown
The conditional 5th heads to Sudbury if Jarret Meyer does not play his OA season with the Wolves. Owen Sound gets younger while the Wolves add another potential OA option for next season.

Kitchener

Sean Allen

to

Oshawa

SSM 3rd ;17
10th rd '18

Breakdown

Kitchener adds more assets by moving former 3rd round pick Sean Allen who just couldnt not regularly break the Kitchener lineup. He adds more youth to the Oshawa blueline as they continue to target value  moves while they add picks for their veterans. This is the 4th team in less than a year for SSMs 3rd round pick in '17. First to Sarnia in the DeAngelo trade. Then to Oshawa in the Mistele trade and now to Kitchener. You have to wonder if this poor pick will be hear long. Another trade and you may have to question what the SSM 3rd round pick in '17 is like in the dressing room.

Saginaw

Mitchell Webb

to

Erie

for

10th in '16

Breakdown

Simply Saginaw moving surplus while Erie picks up a body to use during the world juniors while Strome and Debrincat are away. Webb has been playing for St. Catharines in the GOJHL and brings over 100 games of OHL experience.

Mississauga

Cameron Zanussi
4th round pick '18

to

Saginaw

Joseph Murdaca
9th round pick '18

Breakdown

With the Steelheads get aggressive and make a move for Murdaca. This makes you wonder if they are hitching their wagon to Murdaca for next season when they will be primed to make a run at the OHL Championship. Doesnt 100% address their goalie questions for next season buy Boyd seems confident based on the price he paid.

Saginaw

David Ovsjannikov

to

Barrie

7th round pick '18

Breakdown

WJC insurance for when Blackwood is with Team Canada. mediocre numbers with Saginaw but he has been stellar in his first 2 games with Barrie. As a '97 he could be an option next year as they look for a longer term replacement.
